Summary
Provide care and custody of prisoners incarcerated in the Chehalis Tribal Jail and maintain order and discipline amongst inmates. Participate in the day-to-day operations of the jail which involves, but is not limited to, booking and releasing offenders, maintaining security of the facility, escorting offenders within and/or outside the secure confines of the jail, effectively managing volatile and violent offenders, and fulfilling a number of clerical duties. As part of the Public Safety department, this position is considered essential services for the Chehalis Tribal Government.
Job Duties
- Receives, searches, books, fingerprints, and photographs incoming prisoners; records and stores personal property of prisoners; classifies and houses prisoners.
- Monitor and provide direct supervision of offenders within the housing areas of the jail. This will include direct supervision doing meal service, security checks, medication distribution, and random or scheduled housing and cell searches.
- Orders and distributes food to prisoners. Ensures sanitary standards are maintained in food service distribution.
- Responsible for the general behavior of offenders and directly supervise and escort offenders within the secure perimeter of the jail as assigned.
- Prepare and escort prisoners for court, monitor prisoners in court; and may take into custody court committed defendants.
- Monitor prisoners’ well-being; summon medical aid; and communicate with medical staff. Accurately dispenses medication according to medical instructions; check and record the accuracy of medical orders.
- Conducts periodic cell searches to ensure adherence to jail rules and regulations and confiscates contraband.
- Maintain and update jail records. Use computer system to access information.
- Write reports documenting incidents and places items into evidence.
- Efficiently and accurately complete corrections paperwork including but not limited to: Booking, medication, release records, reports; logs, requests, memos and rosters. Assist in some clerical and reception work to support the corrections program when clerical staff is unavailable.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors; co-workers; outside law enforcement agencies; county, state and federal departments or agencies; and members of the public.
- Respond to emergencies in the jail, which may include the following: Offender assaults, fires, riots, offender disturbances, explosions, natural disasters, and hostage conditions. Immediately and appropriately respond to control these circumstances using appropriate levels of force through physical management of combative, volatile, hostile and assaultive offenders.
- Release prisoners and their property according to established procedures, bail, court order, or as otherwise ordered by appropriate authorities.
- Operate a variety of equipment, including computers, printers, fax and fingerprint machines, digital imaging computers, physical restraint devices, firearms, radios, fire extinguishers, intercom systems, telephones, and equipment found in the central control booth.
- Performs related work as required.
- May be assigned duties under the Chehalis Tribe Emergency Management Plan and Program.
Education & Experience
High School diploma or GED equivalent with at least two (2) years’ directly related experience preferred. Some higher education experience preferred. Prefer experience with American Indian/Alaska Native communities. Must have a valid WADL.
